Sparwood begins construction on off-leash dog park

The District of Sparwood is excited to announce that construction is under way on Sparwood’s first Off-Leash Dog Park.

The park located at 441 Pine Avenue, will provide a safe space for dogs and their owners to enjoy off leash exercise in open grass spaces and forested trails.

Construction is scheduled to take place over the next six to eight weeks and will include approximately 600 m of new trails, over 400 m of fencing, three double access gates and a maintenance gate.  In addition, a new trail alongside the fenced dog park area will also be constructed to ensure those that do not wish to go into the park can still enjoy the area.

“Council is thrilled to see this project begin. We commend the Friends of the Sparwood Dog Park volunteer group for all their hard work, extensive consultation, fundraising and continued dedication to this park. We know this space will be well utilized in the community,” said District of Sparwood Mayor David  Wilks.

“The Friends of the Sparwood Dog Park volunteer group would like to sincerely thank the District of Sparwood, Teck, Columbia Basin Trust, The Elk Valley Thrift Society, Husky, Sarah’s Dog Spaw and all of the community members that have supported us through this process. We couldn’t have done it without you! We are very excited for construction to begin on the dog park and look forward to the years of enjoyment it will bring to our community,” said Lynn Edward, Chair of the Friends of the Sparwood Dog Park volunteer group.

Park maintenance will be overseen by district personnel, which includes cutting grass and snow removal to the entrance from the parking lot, installation of dispenser bags, waste receptacles and signage. All park users will be expected to follow the park rules, including being in control of their dogs at all times and picking up after his/her pets immediately.

Sparwood residents are encouraged to steer clear of the area during construction and watch for an updates on the district website for the official opening of the Sparwood Off-Leash Dog Park.
