Traffic safety and fraud awareness

Elk Valley RCMP would like to remind everyone to be mindful of children on the streets and sidewalks when they return to school after spring break.
Please be mindful and aware of the posted speed limit in school zones of 30 km/h between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
When you see police and emergency vehicle(s) stopped alongside the road that have their emergency equipment activated, please slow down and move over. Motorists must slow their speed to 70 km/h when in an 80 km/h or over zone and 40 km/h when in an under 80 km/h zone. The penalty is a $173.00 traffic violation ticket that carries three penalty points as per the Motor Vehicle Act.
Scam season as well as tax season
The tax season is upon us and that means dubious Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scams will be out there trying to obtain your personal and financial information.
These scams present themselves like this: An individual contacts you pretending to be from the CRA and advises you owe money, and in many cases, they say that if you don’t pay they will contact the police and an arrest will occur.
The scam is about bullying the victim out of their money or personal information. The fraudsters will threaten or use foul language, ask for your information via e-mail or text message, request payment by prepaid credit card, wire transfer; and as of late, prepaid I-tunes cards. They may also demand that you share your tax information.
If any of this happens to you do not provide any information, hang up the phone and report the scam to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre.ca or toll free 1-888-495-8501.
