Impaired driver traveling at 180 km/h
RCMP corral three impaired drivers yesterday and early this morning
On May 28, around 5:30 p.m., a RCMP officer spotted a motorcycle on Highway 95A traveling at a high rate of speed.
To confirm his observations he activated his radar and noted the speed to be 180 km/h in a 100 zone.
The officer conducted a traffic stop and upon speaking to the operator noted signs of alcohol consumption. An impaired driving investigation was initiated and a breath demand made.
The driver provided two breath samples, both a “Fail.” He is now prohibited from driving for 90 days and his motorcycle is impounded for 30 days. In addition he received a violation ticket for Excessive Speed.
“He told the officer he had just passed some vehicles and was slowing down. You cannot exceed the speed limit to pass. This was a very dangerous mix and had the operator lost control or a deer jumped out the result could have been fatal,” said Sgt. Chris Newel, Kimberley RCMP Detachment commander.
The same evening officers were conducting a road check on 4th Avenue in Kimberley. A truck approached the check around 10:30 p.m. and officers noted the vehicle did not have valid insurance. During the interaction officers detected an odor of alcohol. The breath demand was read and the driver provided two breath samples, both a “Warn.” The driver was served a three-day driving prohibition and his vehicle impounded. He also received a violation ticket for No Insurance.
Then around 2:30 a.m. on May 29, officers checked a vehicle and the driver showed signs of consuming alcohol. A breath demand was read and two samples obtained, both were a “Fail.” He was served a Driving Prohibition for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for 30 days.
“Traffic safety and enforcement is a strategic priority for the Kimberley RCMP. In addition to Motor Vehicle Act infractions officers are continually watching for impaired drivers. The results from last night are a testament to their commitment,” Sgt. Newel stated.
