Notes from City Hall

Winter Parking Regulations around Kimberley Alpine Resort and Nordic Club

Snow sport enthusiasts are reminded that parking is restricted on North Star Drive, Stemwinder Drive and in the vicinity of the bridge on Gerry Sorensen Way. Parking within five metres (15 feet) on either side of a fire hydrant is prohibited as well. These parking regulations were put in place for fire safety and to ensure access for emergency vehicles. Vehicles parked in contravention of the posted parking regulations will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense in the tow away zones. Vehicles blocking access to a fire hydrant will also be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.

Preventing Frozen Water Pipes

Did you know that frost sinks lower as the air temperature climbs higher? Now is the time to take action to prevent frozen water pipes. If the water service line to your home has ever frozen or you have noticed a reduced water flow in your home during the winter, leave one tap running cold water day and night (stream should be the size of a pencil). This will help to prevent your lines from freezing. Since frost sinks deeper into the ground when air temperatures rise after a period of extreme cold, you will need to keep the water running 24/7 until the end of March to avoid having the line freeze.

The City of Kimberley encourages residents who have experienced frozen water service lines in the past to be pro-active; ensure indoor lines are properly insulated, keep a good snow cover over the ground above the service lines and install a bleeder line system in your home or business. Stop by the Operations desk for your free bleeder fitting while supplies last. For more information.

Moving Parked Cars

The City of Kimberley strives to keep our roads and trails safe for travelling vehicles and pedestrians. Residents also have a role to play in keeping our winter roads safe and serviceable. One way you can help with snow removal in your neighbourhood is to remove your vehicles from the street before plowing takes place. Moving parked vehicles off the streets allows operators to work more efficiently and to clear a wider path to ensure easy access for emergency vehicles.

Dog Etiquette

Please keep your dog on a leash in public places within city limits, including the NorthStar Rails-to-Trails. There are a few designated off-leash areas within the city, please check out the city website for more information. Remember to pick up your dog’s excrement on all trails, use the bags provided and place it in the receptacles. If you notice that the bag holder is empty contact the Animal Control Officer at 250-427-6460. Please be conscientious of everyone who uses the trails, as no one likes to step in dog poo! Let’s all pitch in to keep our trails clean and clear.
