Trashy but Flashy Fashion Show returning

The always popular Trashy but Flashy Fashion Show has been missing from Earth Day Fernie festivities for a few years but it is back for 2017!

This perennial favourite only happens if Earth Day falls on a Saturday and lucky for us this year it does!

This fusion of trash and flash aims to inspire the community to assess their consumption patterns by demonstrating creative methods of reusing recyclable items into a garment worthy of greatness. Previous years have featured a bubble wrap tuxedo, a coffee filter dress and hat, a flour sack warrior and more fabulous designs created by people of all ages. Trashy but Flashy welcomes every style, age, ability, and concept so if you can dream it then you can make it!

Garments must be 100% made from recyclable or reused materials but how they are held together is up to the designer. Thread, tape, tea bag strings and other constructive materials are allowed but keep in mind judges will be looking all facets of the garment to determine the quantity of reused material. Speaking of judges, there will be an esteemed panel of personalities deciding how to award the cash prizes in a number of categories. The judges will be looking for the elements and uniqueness of materials used, creativity and craftsmanship in deciding the 2017 Trash but Flashy Champion!

Entry fee is $15 and the designer must supply his/her own model for the fashion show. Hair and makeup is provided if required. Classrooms, churches, businesses, groups, individuals, non-profits – anyone and everyone is welcome to join in so challenge all your friends and more to join in on the fun at the Trashy but Flashy Fashion Show!

The Trashy but Flashy Fashion Show is a part of Earth Day Fernie, hosted and organized by Wildsight Elk Valley on April 22, starting at 3:30 p.m. The Fashion Show begins at 6 p.m. at the Fernie Community Centre.
