The Sword in the Stone comes to Kimberley
By Robin Knight
There are many legends and much mythology that has blended together to create our collective knowledge of the middle ages.
King Arthur, and his knights of the round table, featured in many of the myths and legends of the past, and at the heart of them all, is the sword in the stone. Whether our knowledge of the sword in the stone is slanted by Disney’s cartoon (The Sword in the Stone), the TV series Merlin, Geoffrey of Monmouth’s The History of the Kings of Britain, or stories heard in childhood, there is little doubt that The Sword in the Stone is the most well known weapon in medieval legend. Versions of the sword exist in French, Welsh, Irish, and even Norse legends. So what Medieval Festival could be complete without it’s own Sword in the Stone?
This is a question The Kimberley City Bakery asked as they planned this year’s festival. While there are versions of The Sword in the Stone in Disneyland and Disneyworld, they wanted to bring one to their free Medieval Festival, which takes place July 9 and 10 in Kimberley’s Platzl and Coronation Park Ball Diamond.
If you would like to see the Sword in the Stone prepped for this year’s festival, it is on display in front of The Kimberley City Bakery, just waiting for you to come and see if, maybe, you are this century’s Arthur, and will be crowned King or Queen of the festival, and the land of Kimberley!
With Disney announcing their live adaptation of Sword in the Stone to be written by Game of Thrones Producer, Bryan Cogma, it’s the perfect time for a Sword in the Stone selfie in Kimberley. So the question remains – are you worthy to pull the sword from the stone?
