Basketball season begins for Mount Baker
By Kaley Wasylowich
The first game of the basketball season started with the Mount Baker Secondary School Junior Girls playing the Cardston Cougars from Alberta.
With some jitters and nervousness, they found themselves down at the half 19-47. The second half they came out stronger, feeling more confident but playing such a strong team they ended up with a final score 36-84.
The second game was against the Raymond Comets – another strong team. The girls kept it tight in the first quarter and were only down by five. They worked hard and were still down by nine at the half. The Baker girls battled through the third and fourth quarters but were again overwhelmed by the tough competition ending the game 37-62.
The third team had the girls playing the Willowcreek Cobras. The guards were able to put points on the board with fast break feeds and a tough full court press and found themselves up by three points (31-28) at half time. With all the girls chipping in, their confidence was high. Feeding off each other and running the opposition hard they pulled away in the third (56-43). The fourth quarter brought out great teamwork and dedication from all and the girls pulled out a great victory (70-58). It was a great way to start their season.
They play their next tournament in Lethbridge, at Chinook High School, on December 9/10.
