PechaKucha rips for a third time
From bats to songs of a lifetime, bathrooms abroad to a few of my favourite things –PechaKucha Night 3 was a rapid-fire room filled with entertainment and enlightenment.
Nine speakers from around the East Kootenay took to the dais in Cranbrook’s Key City Theatre’s foyer Jan. 25 and addressed the sold-out audience about nine subjects – using 20 slides and speaking for 20 seconds per image.
Leigh Anne Isaac opened, speaking about bats and the need for bat champions and the role of Kootenay residents in bat conservation.
Bruce Childs spoke passionately about his ‘Far and Near’ recording project, which takes in half a century of song-writing adventures.
Japhy Hunt took the audience into the bright, dingy and funny corners of bathrooms from Cuba to Mexico, Europe and more in ‘Beyond the bowl.’
Heather Wattie spoke poetically about claiming one’s creative voice.
Paula Gordon, with a crisp delivery honed from decades in the communication and media worlds, shared ‘These are a few of my favourite things.’
Pat Schwartz engaged the older audience members, especially, with a well-researched look into ‘Co-housing: re-creating the village.’
Sioban Staplin took the audience to Japan with the colourful presentation: There and back again – musings on Japan.
Craig Hillman, with dry humour and sharp wit, presented ‘DIY BIY FIY’ – a treatise on the joys of learning to do things yourself.
And Chris Kimber provided a look into why ‘Cranbrook is a great place to grow an urban farm.’
While all that may sound like a dog’s breakfast – it works beautifully.
The next PechaKucha event is on Friday, June 1 at Key City Theatre. Tickets will go on sale in May.
“As this event has grown in popularity we recommend people buy their tickets in advance to avoid disappointment,” said organizer Andra Louie.
Also, Andra could use some help staging these events.
“If you would like to get involved in PechaKucha Night; we need assistance in social media marketing and poster distribution,” she said.
