Hopley sentencing to be delayed
The sentencing hearing for Randall Hopley, 46, concludes today (July 19) in Cranbrook, but it appears as though the man who abducted three-year-old Sparwood resident Kienan Hebert last September won’t know his full sentence for at least another couple of months.
The reason for the delay is Crown prosecutor Lynal Doerksen wants a “harsher” sentence for Hopley, who has pleaded guilty to abducting Kienan Hebert.
“We want to have him assessed for 60 days to determine if he should be found a dangerous offender or long-term offender,” Doerksen stated.
Should Doerksen be successful, Hopley’s sentencing will be delayed even further as a dangerous offender hearing would be required.
A main reason the Crown is seeking a harsher sentence is a 1985 incident where Hopley was convicted of sexually assaulting a five-year-old boy and a follow-up psychiatric report warned he could offend again.
Hopley has been kept in solitary confinement in Kamloops since his September 2011 arrest, for his own protection, stated his lawyer William Thorne.
