Officials celebrate Koocanusa boat launch

A commemorative plaque noting the contributing organizations that helped make the Koocanusa boat launch a reality last year was officially unveiled Thursday, Nov. 1 in a brief ceremony organized by the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK).

Located on the northwest side of the Kikomun Bridge, the two-hectare boat launch site was well-used in what was one of the highest water years ever, noted RDEK board chair, Electoral Area C director Rob Gay.

Along with RDEK officials and area residents who were key in focusing larger efforts on establishing the boat launch, BC Hydro, the Columbia Basin Trust and Teck, as well as the Conservation Officer Service and the Province of B.C., represented by Kootenay East MLA and Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Bill Bennett, were on hand for the occasion.

Bennett said the establishment of the boat launch and the cooperation required by numerous parties, including the Ktunaxa Nation, ranks as one of the top highlights of his 12 years in the provincial government.
