Members sought for new EK wildlife advisory committee
People with a passion for East Kootenay wildlife and their habitats are sought for a new East Kootenay wildlife advisory committee.
Since the fall of 2022, a diverse group of people with extensive local knowledge of wildlife have been meeting to talk about wildlife, habitat, and the possibility of forming a new advisory committee in response to the provincial government’s Together for Wildlife Strategy.
The East Kootenay discussions were kick-started by local stakeholders in collaboration with the Province of B.C. to help evolve this interim committee toward a new, permanent wildlife and habitat advisory committee for the East Kootenay.
An open call for permanent committee members is now underway and interested applicants are invited to apply online by Monday, December 4.
Appointments to the committee will be for two-year periods. The new committee membership will be announced in winter 2023/24. Members must have a demonstrated commitment to wildlife and habitat conservation, skills for respectfully and effectively collaborating with others, and the time to be an active and engaged member.

The committee will advise provincial government staff, namely the Directors of Resource Stewardship Operations and Resource Management, on the regional implementation of the Together for Wildlife strategy. In this role, the committee will centre its work on providing expert knowledge and advise on priorities and opportunities to improve the stewardship of terrestrial wildlife and habitat.
This committee will not replace the existing Kootenay Wildlife Harvest Advisory Committee, which is the venue for conversations and advice related to hunting and trapping regulations. Hunting and trapping regulations are not currently within the scope of the Wildlife and Habitat Advisory Committee.
