Watercraft found abandoned on Elk River

On July 11, Elk Valley Regional RCMP received a report of two watercraft tied up in trees in the Elk River across from James White Park, near Fernie.

Investigation revealed witnesses who saw the person(s) successfully leave the river safely yesterday on their own accord.

“Bottom line is, please report any watercraft that is lost or caught up in debris on the river to the RCMP so emergency services personnel know you are safe and whether you require additional assistance for injuries or based on the situation,” said S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander.

“Please describe the lost watercraft as best you can in order to ensure that, if this shows up later or is further reported by someone else, that it is easily identified as just being abandoned.

“If the item is caught up and you have the ability to take a photo of it in its current state, that would greatly assist emergency personnel as well.”
