Aquatic Centre vandalism leads to charges and fines
An Elk Valley man has been found guilty of Mischief relating to damages caused to the Fernie Aquatic Centre on October 29, 2022.
On that date staff at the Aquatic Centre arrived and observed rocks and dirt in the pool with broken glass on the pool deck. Damages were observed to a large glass window with glass and rocks falling onto the pool deck and into the pool itself.
A swim event was scheduled for nearly 100 local youth and children on the day and had to be cancelled due to the damages and resulting clean-up.
Elk Valley front line police officers attended the scene and through their investigation located DNA evidence on scene that led to the identification and arrest of a man from the Elk Valley.
The man was placed on probation related to the offence and was ordered to repay over $20,000 to cover damages with a significant portion of that going to the Fernie Swim Club.
Sgt. Brad Gregory stated the following via email: “I am glad that there is finally some resolution in this. This is one that I am personally quite satisfied with, and proud of the investigation that Cst. Schmid completed to bring it to this conclusion.”
Elk Valley RCMP is proud to do our part to support our local agencies and partners and are happy to see this file come to this conclusion.
