Site clean up getting underway this week

Clean-up of the former Knight’s Hall/Tudor House property on King Street in Cranbrook is set to get underway with the contractor – Scott Contracting and Excavation – mobilizing and equipment arriving on site through the weekend, with work to start early next week.

The cleanup of the site will begin with the removal of concrete foundations with work ongoing through December with completion in late January 2026.

The City of Cranbrook became the legal owner of the major eyesore property on October 7, then immediately issued a call for contractor bids for the demolition of buildings and surface cleanup with a number of companies providing bids.

Council approved spending up to $1.29 million for the demolition and surface clean-up of the property, including $500,000 for Regional District of East Kootenay landfill tipping fees and hazardous materials management. These cleanup costs are expected to be recovered through the future sale or lease of the property, which has an appraised post-cleanup value between $1.27 million and $1.43 million for 3 acres of fully serviced flat land near downtown.

Both the former Knight’s Hall and the former Kootenay Springs building have been long-standing eyesores in the community. The Kootenay Springs, demolished in March 2025 and the site cleaned up shortly afterwards, created a significant visual improvement in that area thanks to the quick action of the new owners.

With that project complete, attention shifted to the other prominent Cranbrook eyesore—the old Knight’s Hall property—which is now being addressed.

“The city wasted no time to get moving to clean up the Knights Hall property once it transferred to city ownership in October,” said Mayor Wayne Price. “Cleaning up this site along with the cleanup of the former Kootenay Springs building earlier this year will be a major visible improvement for Cranbrook.”

The City announced that it officially became the owner of the former Knight’s Hall property on October 22. You can find that public announcement here.
