District addresses discoloured water
By District of Invermere
We’ve seen questions and concerns regarding discoloured tap water following yesterday’s fire response and want to provide some factual information.
The discoloured water some residents are experiencing is the result of an unusual, high-demand hydraulic event caused by heavy hydrant use during firefighting activities. This increased water flow can temporarily stir up naturally occurring sediment that has settled within water mains.
The brown colour is not caused by soil, contamination, or unsafe drinking water.
Some important facts:
- The sediment contains naturally occurring minerals, including manganese.
- The district’s source water meets applicable drinking water quality guidelines and is regularly tested by an independent laboratory.
- During high-flow events, disturbed sediment can temporarily increase the amount of manganese detected in water samples because the sediment has been stirred up within the water distribution system.
- While the water remains safe, discoloured water can cause staining to laundry, fixtures, and household appliances.
- Running a cold-water tap for several minutes will usually clear the water.
As part of our ongoing water system maintenance program, Public Works flushes water lines twice annually to help remove accumulated sediment from the distribution system.
However, the current discolouration is associated with yesterday’s firefighting activities and not the district’s routine hydrant flushing program.
