Ahead of upcoming local government elections in October, the BC SPCA is asking communities across the province what animal control issues matter most to them.

The non-profit animal welfare organization is running a short public survey until August 7 to gather data on the most pressing concerns impacting the lives of people and animals in B.C.

“It takes a whole community to care for animals. Pet guardians and other residents, organizations like the BC SPCA, and local governments all working together to keep animals happy, healthy and safe means improved quality of life for animals and people! It gets us that one step closer to animals and people thriving together,” explained Ebony Logins, local government relations officer, BC SPCA.

“Community health and safety improve dramatically when effective animal control bylaws are adopted and enforced. More happy pets can live out their lives safe at home with their families in communities with strong animal control bylaws that outline the minimum standards for animal care and local governments are empowered to address welfare concerns proactively, before a situation becomes too serious.”

Several animal control bylaw provisions proven to enhance community welfare are recommended for local governments by the BC SPCA.

The results of this survey, which compares community interest against these evidence-based provisions, will help inform the BC SPCA’s advocacy efforts through the 2026 local government election and the organization’s ongoing work to address the root causes of animal suffering.
