Electoral Area B Volunteer of the Year recognized

Joanne Gareau has been honoured as the Electoral Area B 2026 Volunteer of the Year in appreciation of the dedication, effort, and support she has given to the area.

“Joanne has made an extraordinary contribution to our community through her tireless volunteer service, and her impact can be felt in so many corners of Area B,” said Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area B Director Stan Doehle.

As President of the Galloway Curling Club, Gareau takes on a range of responsibilities including administration, record keeping, promotion, and volunteer coordination. Thanks in large part to her leadership over the past three years, the Galloway Curling Club has seen several important upgrades including the replacement of the 70-year-old ice plant, new piping system installation, septic system upgrades, and much more.

As a trained curling instructor, she works with Jaffray School to introduce students to curling, pass on skills, and build enthusiasm.

Joanne is also an active member of the Sand Creek Seniors Club, serves as president of the group that oversees Pinewood Manor seniors housing, and is an active supporter of the Sand Creek Lady Lions, she is also involved with the local Community Club and Social Planning Council, where she helps address important issues affecting our community, including food insecurity.

“What stands out most about Joanne is not only the number of roles she has taken on, but the care, energy, and heart she brings to all of them. She is a huge part of the vibrancy, connection, and recreational success of Area B,” added Doehle.

Gareau was presented with a gift and formally recognized at a Volunteer of the Year reception event held last night in Jaffray.
