Rural Columbia Valley leaders helm new RDEK board

RDEK chair and vice chair acclaimed for coming year

There is new leadership at the helm of the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) following the annual election of Chair and Vice Chair.

Electoral Area F Director Susan Clovechok was acclaimed as Board Chair.

Clovechok will take over the role from Rob Gay, who served as the Board’s Chair for the past 15 years.

“I am grateful for Rob’s leadership and learned so much from him during the years, particularly as we worked closely together during my time as Vice Chair. I will take those lessons forward with me in my new role,” said Clovechok.

“Our Board has developed a reputation across the province for the respectful, effective way we work together around the table. As we welcome many new faces, I look forward to building on that tradition and continuing the strong, respectful workingrelationships that define this Board.”

Clovechok previously served as Vice Chair from 2021-2025.

Electoral Area G Director Roberta Schnider was re-elected by acclamation as Vice Chair for her second term.

“I am grateful for the support of the Directors and the confidence they’ve placed in me as Vice Chair. I have a strong working relationship with Chair Clovechok and am looking forward to working with the Board on behalf of the residents of our region,” said Schnider.

This will be the first year since 2005 that Rob Gay will not be at the table. The long-time Chair has retired from public service and is excited for the new leadership at the table.

“Susan will do an exceptional job as Chair, and she and Roberta will make a strong team. They both bring an incredible passion for the region, a wealth of experience and strong leadership. The RDEK is in good hands,” Gay stated.

The elections took place during the RDEK Board Meeting this morning (Nov. 7).
