Hopley plea delayed two weeks
B.C. Provincial Court Judge Grant Sheard agreed to a two-week delay in the Randall Hopley kidnapping case Feb. 20.
With Hopley once again appearing in court via video feed, albeit for only about one minute, from the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre, his legal counsel William Thorne asked Sheard for a delay in order to have lengthier discussions with the Crown. The judge agreed, stating he is hopeful a plea will be entered March 5.
Along with a plea, the form of trial (judge alone or judge and jury) will also be determined then.
Hopley, 46, was arrested Sept. 13 near Crowsnest Pass, Alta., six days after three-year-old Kienan Hebert was abducted from his Sparwood home. Four days later, during a massive manhunt, bolstered by the incremental reach of social media such as Facebook, Kienen was returned to his home in the middle of the night – apparently unharmed.
Hopley received a psychiatric review and was found fit for trial and in December he chose not to have a bail hearing and has been incarcerated in Kamloops since.
