Top help for the Women’s Resource Centre

Melanie Gould (right) with the Friends of the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre, accepts a donation from Top Crop employee Kathy Hunt. Staff at Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet in Cranbrook raised $518.86 through staff auctions, hot lunches, bake sales and other activities.

The money will help keep the doors of the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre open. After operating for over 30 years with funding from the Province of British Columbia, the centre was informed in 2004 that the provincial government would no longer pay for ongoing costs. For the past three years, the centre has scraped by with one-time grants, donations and funding from other sources, but this money will run out in April 2012.

“It costs $137 to keep the doors open for one day,” explains Gould. “The centre provides a vital service to women and families in Cranbrook and the region, from crisis intervention and referrals to meals, computer access and even just a friendly person to listen and give emotional support.” Hunt says Top Crop staff is happy to help keep the doors open and is challenging businesses in the community to get behind this great cause as well.
