COTR welcomes students to new school year

College of the Rockies is ready to welcome more than 2,000 new and returning students on Tuesday, September 2.

Tuesday is set aside for students to orient themselves, get a locker, meet their classmates, get their student ID cards, buy textbooks and have some fun. Day and evening classes will start on Wednesday, September 3.

At the Cranbrook main campus, Manager of Campus Life and Athletics Cori Andrichuk noted, “The day kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with a welcome and announcements followed by information sessions hosted by returning students that are geared towards helping students be successful at COTR. The afternoon will be a ton of fun with a free barbecue sponsored by President and CEO David Walls and the first annual ‘Program Wars’ event.”

“Orientation continues right through the week,” Andrichuk continued. “There are lots of activities scheduled for students and employees including Welcome Back Volleyball (with rumour of pizza and pop to follow) and a Pins ‘n’ Pizza bowling night.”

The fun doesn’t end there. Events are planned throughout the month of September including Whitewater Rafting, a trip to the Fernie Aerial Park and Zip-Line, and more.

Manager, Communications and Marketing Heather Jackson added, “Our students primarily come from the Kootenays region; however, we also attract learners from across Canada and around the world. We actively recruit students by promoting the Rocky Mountain lifestyle, our friendly communities, our lower tuition and smaller class sizes, our excellent faculty and staff at all our campuses and the wide variety of programs we offer.”

“Our faculty is very qualified and this is recognized across the province. Our support staff is knowledgeable, helpful and truly professional in every way. We are extremely fortunate to have such dedicated faculty and staff whose sole purpose is to help students succeed. And this all starts right from Day One, Tuesday, September 2,” Jackson concluded.

With options for full-time or part-time programs as well as individual courses to complete a credential or to further explore ones interests, the college offers something for every type of learner. Many programs and courses are still accepting applications until September 17.
