Griz Days 2014 a bit more extreme than usual

Cold. What cold?

The annual Griz Days celebrations in Fernie last weekend (Feb. 29-March 2) came with a few extra layers.

Or in the case of the men’s Extreme Griz winner, listed as ‘Top-O,’ none at all.

Festival participants and onlookers braved -30 C temperatures, with an extreme wind chill warning in effect Friday and Saturday, forcing organizers to re-shuffle their presentation deck.

Musical entertainment Thar Be Dragons and Good Ol’ Goats (Friday) and Los Morenos (Saturday) was moved indoors at The Arts Station and sidewalk fire-bins roared larger and hotter than usual, but few people could be heard complaining.

The turnout for the Saturday evening Griz Days Parade was understandably smaller than normal but there was no lacking for colour or character.

“Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate Griz Days 2014. The weather was darn cold but we still managed to have a great time and hope you did too! It’s awesome to see Fernie come together to celebrate our annual winter festival despite unfavourable conditions outside,” noted the Fernie Chamber of Commerce earlier today (March 3).
