Mix of weather expected for long weekend

The highways and byways of the East Kootenay will be busy starting Friday afternoon through to Monday evening (Feb. 8) as B.C. Family Day is celebrated, and a mix of weather conditions are forecast.

Highways are currently bare and dry, or wet and bare throughout the region.

The exception being the Creston to Goatfel stretch of Highway 3, currently listed by DriveBC as having slippery sections.

Folks planning to head to Fort Steele Heritage Town for the Family Fun Derby on Monday should be aware Environment Canada is forecasting a mix of sun and clouds.

The weekend’s weather will be a mixed basket but overall not too bad.

Today in Cranbrook and Kimberley it is going to be mainly cloudy with 30% chance of flurries or rain showers, with wind southeast 20 km/h gusting to 40; high plus 3.

Tonight, expect cloudy with 40% chance of flurries or rain showers with wind south 20 km/h and a low of minus 1.

Daytime high temperatures will be around 4C the entire long weekend, with mainly cloudy conditions on Saturday with clearing to a mix of sun and cloud on Sunday and Monday.

In the Columbia Valley, it is mainly cloudy and today’s high will be about 1 C. It will be cloudy tonight with a 60% chance of flurries; wind south 20 km/h and a low of about -4C.

Saturday will be much the same with clearing expected in the afternoon with a high of 1C and a low of -8C, Environment Canada predicts.

Sunday and Monday will be a mix of sun and clouds with highs between 3 and 4C.

It is mostly cloudy with a 30% chance of flurries or rain showers in Sparwood and the Elk Valley today, with wind south 20 km/h gusting to 40. Temperatures are steady near plus 1.

This evening it will be cloudy with a 30% chance of flurries or rain showers. There will be periods of snow beginning late this evening, with two to four cm expected, except near Fernie where 10 cm of snow could accumulate. Winds will be south 20 km/h, becoming northwest 30 km/h this evening. Temperatures will hold steady near zero.

Saturday will feature clouds and a 30% chance of flurries or rain showers in the evening, along with periods of snow beginning late in the evening. Snowfall amounts will range from two four cm, except 10 cm near Fernie. Wind south 20 km/h becoming northwest 30 in the evening.

Temperatures will drop to about -7C in the evening.

Sunday is expected to be sunny, with a high of about 1C and Monday is also projected as sunny with a high of about 6C, Environment Canada states.

People driving through Kootenay National Park on Highway 93 should be aware of brushing work taking place at two locations in the park, with minor delays possible.
