The results of a preliminary assessment into mosquito populations and breeding grounds in the Wardner, Mayook, Bull River and Fort Steele area will be unveiled in early November.

“There has been a great deal of work behind the scenes by a group of residents to gather historical data regarding mosquitoes and the next step was to have a formal assessment done so we have a baseline understanding,” explained Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area C Director and Board Chair Rob Gay. “Culex Environmental Ltd. completed that assessment earlier this year and will be bringing the results of their initial fieldwork to the community at the upcoming meeting.”

The meeting will be held on Monday, November 3, at 7 p.m. at the Wardner Community Hall.

Aside from the presentation by Culex Environmental, there will be presentations by the community-working group on the historic observation of mosquitoes in the area, and the RDEK regarding the lessons learned from their Mosquito Control Program in the Wasa area.

There is currently no mosquito control program in the Wardner, Mayook, Fort Steele area.

“This meeting will provide residents with a deeper understanding about the mosquito populations and options moving forward and may help them decide whether there is an interest in approaching the RDEK about investigating what a mosquito control service could look like for them,” added Gay.

Residents from Fort Steele, Mayook, Colony Road, Bull River, Wardner, and Norbury Lake areas are encouraged to attend the meeting.
