Sparwood passing lane project completed

Motorists have new passing opportunities along Highway 3 in Sparwood, thanks to a new $7.5 million westbound passing lane, which was completed on October 23.

“This project will make Highway 3 safer for residents and visitors to our region,” said Bill Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East. “I’m very pleased to see the completion of these important improvements.”

The community identified the need for improved passing lane on this section of Highway 3.

This project created a new 2.7 kilometres westbound passing lane in Sparwood, approximately 1.6 kilometres west of the Highway 43 and Highway 3 intersection to increase safety for motorists along Highway 3.

Work included intersection amalgamation/relocation, side road improvements and replacement of 9 culverts for improved drainage.

The project was constructed by Barrie MacKay Contracting Ltd. of Cranbrook.

This westbound passing lane increases safety, mobility, and reliability for all motorists, including local drivers, tourists, and commercial trucks.

This creates better and safer access to local recreational activities, such as the Elk Valley Provincial Park, the world class fly-fishing on the Elk River, and Fernie Alpine Resort.
