Canal Flats mayoral vote split

Village of Canal Flats voters are split

Mayoral candidates Doug McCutcheon and Mark Doherty have both received 158 votes (49.7% apiece) according to Elections BC.

While the mayoral vote remains up in the air, the village will feature four new council members.

Justin Stanbury (244 votes), Anora Kobza (241), Jennifer Noble (212) and Patricia Reed (192) captured the most votes.

According to the B.C. government, a tie between two or more candidates must be broken in accordance with the Local Government Act and the local government election bylaw. A tie may be broken by drawing by lot (a random draw) or by runoff election. A local government’s election bylaw must specify that drawing by lot will be used as the method for breaking a tie between candidates—otherwise, a runoff election must be held to break the tie.

A runoff election means that all unsuccessful candidates from the original election may run in a second election. The runoff election can only be held after a judicial recount in which no winner was declared. Generally, runoff elections are conducted under the same rules as the original local election.

More to come.
