Fairmont flood mitigation announcement coming

In mid-June 2013 Fairmont Hot Springs was hit by flooding along Dutch Creek and down along Fairmont Creek.

Remarkably, no one was killed or injured when a massive debris field that broke loose up Fairmont Creek roared downhill over a section of the community, including Mountainside Golf Resort. Ian Cobb/e-KNOW

This flooding followed a year after a major stream build-up giveaway on Fairmont Creek that produced a flood and rock/landslide (July 15, 2012).

Since that time the Regional District of East Kootenay has been working on a flood mitigation plan.

The provincial government has declared that Energy and Mines Minister and Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett will be making an announcement on behalf of Naomi Yamamoto, Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness, this Friday regarding flood mitigation in Fairmont Hot Springs.

The announcement will be made at 1:30 p.m. at the Lion’s Den,
5003 Hot Springs Road, Fairmont Hot Springs.
