No stopping zone ordered in park

A Restricted Activity Order has been instituted by the Superintendent, Lake Louise and Yoho and Kootenay National Parks along a section of Highway 93.

The no stopping zone order, Pursuant to section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, is due to wildlife, including both grizzly and black bears, frequenting the road side in search of natural food.

As a result there is no stopping for 11 km along Highway 93 south from McKay Creek Operations Centre to Cobb Lake in Kootenay National Park. Stopping in this zone is only permitted within designated trailhead parking areas, Parks Canada reported.

The order is in place because drivers stopping creates traffic hazards that are dangerous to passing vehicles and increases danger to wildlife through habituation to people and vehicles.

Traffic congestion can also increase the chance of wildlife being struck on the road.
