Mayoral candidate Wray announces action items

Since announcing her mayoral candidacy on January 15, Lynnette Wray has shared her campaign theme, “Building our future together for an affordable and vibrant Cranbrook.”

She has also shared her campaign priorities: “Build new housing, grow our local economy, bring grants and investments to Cranbrook, strengthen community safety and well-being, and connect with community members.”

Mayoral candidate Wray, a City of Cranbrook councillor, has now identified nine specific action items that she will focus on to improve community affordability and vibrancy in Cranbrook.

  1. Continue to identify and implement cost-savings and time-efficiencies within current service levels by strengthening the city’s supportive and positive work culture, where questions, ideas, and new strategies are welcomed and encouraged, consistent with the October 2019 Cuff report recommendations
  2. Integrate Restorative Justice into our local Cranbrook RCMP detachment by securing grant funding and applying best practices from other communities to create an effective and sustainable program.
  3. For hard-to-build below-market housing, seek new opportunities to work with non-profits such as Habitat for Humanity and organize a community workshop to explore the potential for cooperative housing initiatives in Cranbrook.
  4. Collaborate with community partners to develop and implement a grant-funded banner art program, contributing to downtown revitalization and beautification.
  5. Working with downtown businesses and local non-profits, develop a plan for a metal public washroom to provide an essential public service and to support our local business community.
  6. Create a volunteer youth councillor position to develop our future leaders, based on best practices from neighbouring communities.
  7. Explore economic development opportunities related to forest management and wildfire mitigation, such as biochar/bio-fuel initiatives.
  8. Actively work with community groups who are interested in leading community sports and recreation improvements such as a bike pump track, lights at Moir Park ball fields, skate park expansion, and an indoor multi-sport facility.
  9. Proactively engage with key stakeholders to attract and retain family doctors, nurse practitioners, and other key medical personnel in our community.
