42nd annual Kootenay Country Fair Sept. 8

Just one month away, September 8, at Fort Steele Heritage Town you can experience a family event that has been running for more than 40 years, the Kootenay Country Fair (KCF).

What is a country fair and why is it relevant to you?

The KCF is baking, art, flowers, knitting, crafts, vegetables, 4-H displays, musicians, sack races, dog show, face painting, photography, food vendors, quilting, commercial vendors (start your unique Christmas gift shopping), and much more.  There is an auction at 4:30 p.m. where you can bid on flower arrangements, home baking, art, veggies and other items. The proceeds go to scholarships at local high schools.

The fair is so much more. It is families meeting and enjoying the day together in the great outdoor. Petting animals you may not get close and personal with in your daily living. Kids can burn energy in the wide open spaces of Fort Steele.

Watch as dogs strut their stuff in the annual Family Dog Show to vie for titles like Smallest Dog or Toughest Looking Dog.  Don’t forget the fourth annual Zucchini Race. Put wheels on a zucchini, dress it up then send it hurtling down a ramp at top speed against other racers.

Since you are at Fort Steele you can take part in some of their activities like gold panning or wagon rides and view the buildings, some older than you might think.

Have you taken the perfect picture that best represents the East Kootenay? Enter your work in the photography section, to be judged. Your child builds Lego creations so why not help them enter the Junior Crafts section and let the community enjoy the effort for one day. Do you make the best cake from the recipe your grandmother handed down and want to know for sure how good it is. Enter the Adult Baking section where judges will taste and tell with a ribbon. Who knows, ‘Best of Show’ might come your way.

Check the KCF website for information on when and how to enter the many categories we have for all the creative people in our region. There might be a red ribbon to take home for first place.

September 8, Fort Steele Heritage Town, gates open at 9 a.m. for the 42nd annual Kootenay Country Fair.
