4,500 now without power in region

The ongoing windstorm has caused power outages and downed power lines through the East Kootenay this afternoon, with about 4,500 BC Hydro customers so far impacted.

At the moment, our transmission and distribution crews are responding to nine outages in Elkford, Kimberley, Fernie, the Elko and Jaffray area, Windermere and Sparwood. We are looking for the cause and location of each of these faults and we’re working hard to restore power safely and as quickly as possible. Thank you to our customers for your patience,” BC Hydro stated in a media release.

There are downed lines on roads in the region at the moment, including on Highway 3 seven km east of Fernie and Highway 43, 10 km from Sparwood.

It’s important to remember the hazards of electricity. If you come across a fallen power line, assume it is dangerous, stay at least 10 metres back – the length of a school bus – and dial 9-1-1, BC Hydro suggests.

Turn off lights, appliances, and electronic devices to help reduce the demand on the electric system. This makes it easier for crews to restore power. If you have a porch light or other outdoor lighting, leave one outdoor light switched on so that crews can easily identify when your home’s power has been restored.

As of 4:20 pm MDT the following areas are impacted by outages:

Athalmer – 120 customers; Elkford – 1,550; Fernie – 750; Kimberley – 1,900; Kingsgate – 110; Sparwood – 80; Winsor – 200.

Customers can find information about specific outages HERE or by phoning 1-800-BCHYDRO (1-800-224-9376) or *HYDRO (*49376) on your mobile.

If your outage isn’t listed, report it to Hydro when you phone. You can also log in to your BC Hydro account to report an outage online.
