B.C. shutting schools

The B.C. Government this afternoon (March 17) announced that all public schools will be closed in order to help halt the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

“This is a crisis situation,” said Premier John Horgan in a news conference with Minister of Finance Carole James and Minister of Education Rob Fleming earlier today.

Fleming stated all schools from Kindergarten to high school must suspend operations until further notice. Most schools province-wide are currently on spring break.

Should schools not be able to reopen this year, the education minister noted that every student will receive a final grade, with students moving onto the next grade if qualified. Additionally, Grade 12 students on pace to graduate will do so, said Fleming.

More details, including on what financial details the province is working on, will be published shortly.

As of today, COVID-19 has killed more than 3,300 people worldwide, including four in B.C.
