Increasing textiles waste creating consequences

Did you know nearly 500 million kilograms (or about a billion pounds) of clothing and fabric-containing home goods are thrown out by Canadians every year?

Globally, textiles waste has increased dramatically due to the rise in clothing consumption and production.

Textiles Tuesday raises awareness on the environmental consequences of clothing and textiles consumption and provides information on how you can extend the life of your clothing.

Here are some tips on how to take a more sustainable approach to your wardrobe:

  • Choose organic or recycled fabric.
  • Repair clothing instead of purchasing new ones.
  • Shop second-hand.
  • Wash your clothes correctly and less frequently.
  • Choose locally made clothing.
  • Donate clothing to local thrift or consignment stores.
