Regional flooding update for June 2

By RDEK

CURRENT AND FORECASTED CONDITIONS:

Despite the improving weather around the region, the effects of the rainfall over the past 72 hours or so may continue to be felt for a day or two.

The temperatures are expected to rise starting tomorrow and the weather forecast for the remainder of the week into the weekend is calling for unsettled conditions with some sun, cloud, showers and potential thunderstorms.

While snowmelt will likely begin again, at this time it is not anticipated to reach the peak levels of last week, though will be monitored closely.

Environment Canada has lifted the special weather statement for the region, and the High Streamflow Advisory remains in effect for the East Kootenay as water levels are expected to remain high for at least the next few days.

EVACUATION ALERT REMAINS IN EFFECT – FAIRMONT CREEK

The Evacuation ALERT for the Fairmont Creek area in Fairmont remains in effect for 97 properties (including a number of stratas and campsites).

LOOKING AHEAD:

  • As spring freshet continues this week, the sandbag stations remain ready and filled. A full list can be found HERE.
  • We may still experience localized and overland flooding throughout the next few days at least.
  • All waterways at this time of year are susceptible to sudden and unpredictable change, so please continue to stay well back of creek and river banks.
  • The Regional Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and RDEK Flood Response Unit remain activated.

This will be the last daily regional update unless there is a significant change. We will continue to provide updates as needed.

If you see wide-scale flooding that threatens people or homes, please report it to the 24-hour reporting line: 250-489-9677.
