Shame, Mr. Morrison

Letter to the Editor

Dear Mr. Rob Morrison, Kootenay–Columbia MP:

I write to you as one of your constituents, residing in the City of Cranbrook. Specifically, I am writing about your opposition to Bill C–6: An Act to Amend the Criminal Code (conversion therapy).

Shame, Mr. Morrison. Shame.

You have come out of the closet, if you will, as one who supports this abhorrent, cruel, brutal practice of trying to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

Many studies have been published not only about the lack of effectiveness of such treatment, but also which have demonstrated the level of trauma imposed on beloved people who are not in need of any kind of treatment regarding their sexual orientation, never mind such a brutal practice as this.

The trauma of this pseudoscience is well documented. People who have been treated with this level of brutality are:

  • Eight times more likely to attempt suicide;
  • Six times as likely to report high levels of depression;
  • Three times as likely to use illegal drugs; and
  • Three times as likely to be at high risk for HIV and STDs.

Sir, you, along with the other 62 MPs who voted against this bill banning such brutal treatment, were elected to serve your constituents, not to brutalize them.

Shame, Mr. Morrison. Shame.

Rev. Dr. Yme Woensdregt,

Cranbrook
