IIO BC investigating after death of Elkford man

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Elk Valley resulting in one man’s death.

Just after 1 p.m. on February 25, frontline officers from Elk Valley RCMP was called to a residence in the 900-block of Alpine Way in Elkford, for a 911 call, where the police dispatcher was unable to understand what the caller had said.

“When officers arrived, they could see a man on the couch inside the home but he reportedly would not come to the door. While waiting for the man to come to the door, officers became concerned for the man’s well-being and entered the home. BC Emergency Health Services, which had been waiting nearby attended and attempted resuscitation efforts but unfortunately the man was pronounced dead at the home,” BC RCMP reported this afternoon (Feb. 28).

The IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s death.

“Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police,” BC RCMP said.
