Boil water notice for Fernie
In response to a ‘poor rating on the Turbidity Index the City of Fernie has issued a boil water notice (bwn) effective immediately.
Due to an electrical failure at James White Wells, the city has switched to the Fairy Creek water supply.
The turbidity levels at Fairy Creek are higher than 5 NTU, which is common during spring freshet. The City of Fernie is working to make repairs as quickly as possible. Interior Health has been notified, and the public will be advised when the boil water notice is rescinded.
The City of Fernie and Interior Health recommend that all users drink boiled water or a safe alternative until further notice. Water intended for drinking, washing fruits or vegetables, making beverages or ice, or brushing teeth should be boiled for one minute.
Public Facilities: For your part, and as required by B.C.’s Drinking Water Protection Regulation, you must:
- Display the attached BWN poster in common areas;
- Post the attached BWN sink notice at every sink or drinking water fountain accessible to the public; and
- Verbally advise your clientele of the BWN, as opportunities arise.
In addition, you could turn off sinks or fountains, provide a safe alternative to tap water (e.g. bottled water), or install a filtration device that will protect your customers now and in the event of future water quality events.
The City of Fernie is taking additional steps to reduce risk. The public will be notified when conditions change, or water quality has improved.
We appreciate your patience and apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for doing your part to protect public health.
