Fernie Council Connection
The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Jan. 22 City of Fernie council meeting.
GRIZ VISITS MAYOR AND COUNCIL
A special guest, Griz, came to visit Mayor Mary Giuliano and council to sell the first pin of the 2018 Griz Days Winter Festival! Griz pins will soon be available for purchase at local businesses for $3 each. All funds raised will be donated to local charities. More information can be found HERE.
FERNIE AND DISTRICT ARTS COUNCIL LEASE RENEWAL
Council authorized a lease renewal agreement between the City of Fernie and the Fernie and District Arts Council for the building and lands situated at 601 – 1st Avenue, The Arts Station, for a five‐year period from January 1 to December 31, 2022 following the required public notice of disposition.
FERNIE YOUTH ACTION NETWORK
Council reviewed and approved the work plans of the Fernie Youth Action Network for the remainder of Year 1 (Nov 1, 2017 to Feb 28, 2018) and for Year 2 (March 1, 2018 to February 28, 2019). The Fernie Youth Action Network has a variety of activities planned for the upcoming year including cooking classes, movie nights, sport competitions and art lessons.
FERNIE JUDO CLUB
Council approved an amended lease rate for the Fernie Judo Club facility rental at the Max Turyk Community Centre. This will enable the non‐profit sport and recreation group to continue training activities until it can return to the dojo space located in the Curling Club basement.
Council approved the Leisure Services Advisory Board recommendations for an Outdoor Rink schedule. The ice‐surface is free for the public to use and is open daily, weather dependent, from daylight until 10 p.m. Limited programming for youth and adult groups will be scheduled on the rink from Monday‐Friday.
NOTICE OF PROPERTY DISPOSITION
Council authorized notice of the proposed disposition (sale) of land legally described as Lot A, District Lot 4588, Kootenay District Plan 14694, PID 010‐405‐704, civically known as 1501A 8th Avenue for the sum of $120,000 to 1149084 B.C. Ltd. subject to the satisfaction of the terms and conditions detailed in the Contract of Purchase and Sale dated November 22, 2017 and Addendum dated January 15, 2018.
Funds will be allocated to the Facility Reserve Account.
BYLAWS
BYLAW NO. 2330, ZONING BYLAW NO. 1750, AMENDMENT BYLAW NO. 192, 2017 was adopted by council. This bylaw proposes to rezone one 668.14 square metre lot legally described as Lot 10, Block 20, District Lot 4588, Kootenay District, Plan 734 from R1 – Single Family Residential to R1B – Single Detached Plus Residential.
BYLAW 2334, ZONING BYLAW 1750, AMENDMENT NO. 194, 2017 was adopted by council. This bylaw proposes to amend the zoning designation of the lands included within Strata Plan NES2929, civically known as 41‐53 Rivermount Place, and named “Pinnacle Ridge”, from R3 – Medium Density Residential to R3‐R – Medium Density Residential – Riverside.
BYLAW 2337 – WEST FERNIE INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADE LOCAL SERVICE AREA BYLAW was adopted by Council. On March 6, 2015, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) established a service area by adopting Bylaw 2588. This service area bylaw established the boundaries for which monies would be collected to cover the debt taken to finance the West Fernie Infrastructure Upgrades. As part of the letters patent from the Province authorizing the boundary expansion of the city to incorporate West Fernie, the city as been directed to adopt a local area service bylaw prior to January 31, 2018. Bylaw 2337 is a Local Area Service Bylaw that maintains the service area created by the RDEK and incorporates the changes that the province made through the letters patent.
