The City of Fernie today reported that James White Park and area trails have been completely re-opened to the public after a blocked sanitary sewer line forced the closure late last month.

The southern portion of James White Park has been closed to the public for the protection of health and safety as the blockage caused the discharge of untreated waste in the area surrounding the blockage.

Crews were able to successfully excavate and repair the blocked line, and a wastewater specialist brought in to assist the city has determined that there is no longer any risk to public safety.

“Barricades have bene removed from the area and the city would like to thank everyone for respecting the closure while it remained in place,” the city noted on its website.
