RCMP investigating aquatic centre vandalism
As reported on social media by the City of Fernie, the Fernie Aquatic Centre was the target of extensive vandalism on the night of Sunday, October 13.
Elk Valley RCMP attended the complex the morning of October 14 and documented numerous rocks and bricks thrown through windows. Shards of glass extensively littered the interior and may have also polluted the swimming pool.
Police report that officers were being kept busy around the time the attack on the facility took place.
“During this night, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment was kept busy with calls regarding a reported sexual assault, a suicidal person, a weapons complaint, as well as looking for a vehicle that fled from a traffic stop,” reported Cpl. Dan Hay.
“The on-duty officers also remarked that many people were observed in downtown Fernie with open liquor, which is in contravention of the Liquor Control Act, can result in a $368 fine, and unfortunately is a common offence that police deal with in downtown Fernie,” he added.
The aquatic centre vandalism is under investigation and anyone with information can provide it to the Elk Valley RCMP (Fernie office) at 250-423-4404, in person, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
The Aquatic Centre is closed today (Oct. 15) so clean-up and repairs can take place.
