Sea Can use in city report coming
A request for variance was brought forth to City of Fernie council Jan. 28 to allow for the continued placement of a Sea Can on a residential lot.
Aside from this request Mayor Ange Qualizza asked council to consider use of Sea Cans in the community.
Ted Ruiter, Director of Fire and Emergency Services, spoke to the position on Sea Cans from the Fire Chief’s Association of B.C. as a risk to firefighters. He citied a case in B.C. in which a firefighter was killed due to an external fire heating the contest of the Sea Can that resulted in the expansion of the container causing an explosion that was due to the lack of ventilation in Sea Cans.
Council moved to not remove the Sea Can from the subject residential property until a fulsome report on the use of Sea Cans in the community could be examined and good planning practices can be implemented.
