Transgender Day of Remembrance Nov. 20

In recognition of the Transgender Day of Remembrance, the City of Fernie will raise the Transgender flag at City Hall on Friday, November 20 at 8:15 a.m.

Mayor Ange Qualizza will read a proclamation and the flag will be raised.

Attendees are asked to maintain social distancing of two metres and are encouraged to wear a mask. If you are displaying symptoms consistent with COVID-19, we ask that you do not attend the ceremony.

Transgender Day of Remembrance was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honour the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The annual event commemorates all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death.
