Sparwood Lions host District Governor

By S.L. Furedi

The Lions Clubs of the region gathered in Sparwood to share a visitation from two special dignitaries, Thursday, Nov. 3.

District Governor Harry Lippincott, from Ohio, and Regional Zone Chair Jennifer Edgar, from Nelson, were in town to meet with the clubs, and discuss changes, challenges and achievements in the service organization.

Lippincott, an Army veteran, has been a Lion since 1971, serving in many elected roles, and the recipient of multiple awards of distinction.

Edgar is a relatively new Lion, who became more involved following her husband’s term as Zone Chair. She and Lippincott will make multiple trips through the next six months to visit clubs throughout the District, which currently extends from central B.C. to Washington and Idaho.

Sparwood Lions hosted the event at the Causeway Bay, and approximately 40 members of Fernie, Elkford and Sand Creek (Jaffray) clubs enjoyed the dinner and chance to meet and visit.

Sparwood Lions President Danny Dwyer said, “It’s been a couple years since our clubs have had a group visitation like this, and it’s great to see it back.

“Our clubs work together on projects throughout the year, like the Kikomun Run and the Fernie Lions Demolition Derby, but a social evening is a nice change. And it’s easier on the District Governor to make one trip, instead of four, to see us all.”

Lippincott was also asked to take the opportunity to induct two new Sparwood members, Michael Dwyer and Danialle Fedorek, to the club’s roster.

New members are always welcome, and every club is actively recruiting, says Danny Dwyer. “If you’re interested in seeing what is all about, contact a Lion through their Facebook pages. We’d be happy to answer your questions.”

There are more than 1.4 million Lions in 210 countries around the world. An organization whose members volunteer their time to improve their communities, it was formed in 1917 to support those in need through humanitarian service.
