Classical duo to perform at Studio 64

A classical cello-piano duo from Ottawa will perform in concert at Studio 64 in Kimberley on November 8.
Paul Marleyn and Mauro Bertoli, currently touring B.C., are both internationally recognized soloists with impressive résumés when they are not performing together as the acclaimed Marleyn- Bertoli Duo.
Cellist Paul Marleyn has toured North America, Europe and Asia, appearing as a soloist with Canadian and European orchestras. He has been the artistic director of both the Agassiz Chamber Music Festival in Winnipeg since 2000 and the International Cello Festival of Canada since 2011.
The Liverpool Daily Post in England described Paul Marleyn as “a sensitive player of considerable insight and intelligence, with impeccable technique and apparent infallibility of intonation” while Gramaphone Magazine described his playing as “emotionally intense, physically big-boned, and never dull.”
Marleyn is a professor of cello at the University of Ottawa.
Pianist Mauro Bertoli won the prestigious Giuseppe Sinopoli Award in Italy, the country of his birth. He has performed as a soloist in festivals and concert halls in Europe, North America, Israel, Brazil and China and is currently focusing on chamber music. John Teraude of the Toronto Star praised his “flawless technique and deep musicality” and Steven Fielder in the Barrie Examiner acclaimed his “youth, energy, talent and superb musicianship.”
Bertoli is an associate professor of piano at Carleton University in Ottawa.
As the Marley-Bertoli Duo they recently released a CD of Beethoven’s Piano & Cello Sonata #3 in A Major, Opus 69, and Rachmaninov’s Cello & Piano Sonata in G Minor, Opus 19. Their program for the concert at Studio 64 will feature a variety of well-known and less well-known pieces. They include Gluck’s Melodie and Franck’s Sonata in A Major before the intermission, followed by Messiaen’s Louange à l’éternité de Jésus, Debussy’s Beau Soir, Massenet’s Meditation from Thais, Satie’s Selection from Sports and Divertessement, Chopin’s Introduction and Polonaise Brillante op.3, and Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango. A tasty menu by anyone’s standards!
What promises to be an outstanding concert begins at 8 p.m. with seating and bar service beginning at 7:30 p.m.
