Notes from City Hall

Council Agenda

The next regular meeting of City of Kimberley council will be held Monday, February 10 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers upstairs at City Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Brownbag Lunch with Mayor McCormick

On Wednesday, February 12, and on the second Wednesday of each month, Mayor Don McCormick will host a brown-bag luncheon at City Hall from noon until 1:30 p.m.  Bring your own lunch and have a discussion with the Mayor.

Clearing Snow and Ice

Icy sidewalks can be a hazard for everyone including seniors, children, mail carriers, meter readers, firefighters, and paramedics.  As the weather warms up and then freezes again, water from melting snow has caused slippery sections on sidewalks. Property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks outside their premises. Here are a few tips to help maintain your sidewalks, walkways and driveways:

  • Warm weather during the day can make ice soft, so it’s easier to chip or shovel away.
  • Spread sand or gravel on icy patches to make your sidewalk safer for pedestrians. Spreading sand on a sidewalk before ice forms can also make future ice easier to remove.
  • Microwaving sand in a microwave-safe container and spreading it while it is still warm will make the sand embed itself into the ice, creating a gritty top layer.
  • De-icing products are available at local retailers and can be helpful with ice control.
  • Pile snow in a place where it will not run across your sidewalk when it melts and aim your downspouts away from areas where people walk.
  • Please remember that clearing snow and ice from your sidewalk or driveway onto a city street or sidewalk is not permitted. Putting snow out onto the city street or sidewalk can become a public safety concern.

Help Keep Catch Basins Clear

Did you know that the City of Kimberley has over 700 Catch Basins? The city is asking residents to help keep your neighbourhood catch basins clear of snow and ice. This will help to improve the storm water systems ability to collect melting water and rain and reduce the possibility of flooding. Please report any blocked catch basins to the Operations Department at 250-427-9660 or [email protected].

Climate Change Solutions Presentation

The Kimberley Youth Action Network (KYAN) – Environmental Action Team, along with the City of Kimberley and the Citizens Climate Lobby, will host Climate Reality Leader, Laura Sacks. Sacks will present her talk, Climate Change Solutions on Wednesday, February 12 at Centre 64 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and seats are first come, first served. The public is invited to attend.
