Silver Screen Scoundrels Live at Studio 64

By Mike Redfern

Great music, silent films, and comedy best describes the next ‘Live at Studio 64’ concert at Centre 64.

The Silver Screen Scoundrels will bring their entertaining multi-media show to Kimberley on Saturday, March 18. This will be the second of four ‘Live at Studio 64’ concerts this spring although this one will be performed not in Studio 64 but upstairs in the theatre.

Why? So that silent movies can be projected on the big screen while this award-winning duo play their original accompanying music and entertain with great stories and quick wit. Organizers offer their apologies to would-be patrons who cannot manage the stairs to the theatre.

The Silver Screen Scoundrels comprise multi-instrumentalist Brandon Isaak, primarily on guitar, although he plays harmonica, kazoo, banjo, and foot percussion as well, and slap-style stand-up bass player Keith Picot. Isaac was the 2014 winner of the Maple Blues Award as the best acoustic blues performer in Canada and Picot was the 2011 Maple Blues Award winner as Canada’s best bass player. Both have been re-nominated for these top Canadian blues awards in subsequent years.

They first came together in 2012 as The Twisters, playing blues and swing, later reforming as the Silver Screen Scoundrels and touring Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and China, giving original live music performances to original old style silent movies. Their performance has been described as “….a rollicking good time! A mixture of great music mixed with comedy…”

The show starts at 8 p.m. but the bar will be open downstairs at 7:30 and during intermission and, for this occasion, patrons will be permitted to take their refreshments into the theatre with them. Tickets are available for this concert or for the remaining three-concert series at Centre 64 (250-427-4919) or online at eastkootenaysnapd.com.

By the way, about those stairs to the theatre. Kimberley Arts Council is embarking on a fund-raising campaign April 29 to install an outside elevator to the theatre for those who cannot manage the stairs. Look for opportunities to contribute. And Live at Studio 64 patrons will be pleased to learn that, as of the end of March, Studio 64 will boast a stage, allowing patrons seated further back in the audience to better see the musicians.

Next up in the Live at Studio 64 series will be The Sultans of String, performing their Celtic/flamenco/gypsy jazz/Arabic/Cuban/South Asian mix of music in the theatre on Wednesday, April 5, followed by the Jason Buie Band bring its rhythm and blues to the new stage in Studio 64 on Saturday, May 13. Lots to look forward to!
