Randy Cameron has been officially recognized as the 2016 Electoral Area A Volunteer of the Year.

“Randy is an outstanding volunteer and it’s difficult to sum up all of his contributions,” said Regional District of East Kootenay Electoral Area A Director Mike Sosnowski. “Randy’s impact is truly felt across the entire Elk Valley.”

For years Cameron has provided free tents and porta-potties to Mountain Village Seniors Home in Fernie for their outdoor functions and banquets; and, has supported the Fernie and Sparwood Rod and Gun clubs, local girl guides, Canadian Cancer Society, Fernie Fire Department and 4-H. For 30 years has also provided free snow removal service to seniors in the Fernie area. Randy has also provided work trucks for free to the College of the Rockies for their driver training courses.

“Many people don’t know that Randy owns a second home in Hosmer,” added Sosnowski. “He opens this home and allows people in desperate need of a place to stay to stay there for free. You can imagine the impact this gesture has on someone in need.”

Fourteen years ago, Randy was one of the drivers behind the effort to clean up the Fernie Cemetery. He also makes sure that the back road between Vanlerberg Road and the Stanford Inn is plowed through the winter to provide a safe access route to the Highway.

A huge supporter of youth and youth activities, Cameron has driven busses for youth teams, and every year pulls on a bright red suit to bring joy to seniors and children alike on Christmas Eve.

“His wife Patti says that as he puts on the suit, he gets to showcase the person he really is: all about giving. And, he loves nothing more than to give to others and help,” said Sosnowski.

Cameron was presented with a gift during the recent Area A Town Hall Meeting.
