Time to move forward this Sunday
As fresh mid-morning snow flurries sweep over the East Kootenay, signs of spring nearing remain buried.
But take heart! We will gain extra daylight this weekend when we set our clocks forward an hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 12.
With that in mind, Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services wants to remind folks to change their smoke alarm batteries when changing their clocks.
“Most people change their clocks on Saturday night before going to bed. With the time change, Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services (CFES) asks residents to inspect all of your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Ensure you test them and replace all the batteries. Smoke alarms should also be replaced every seven to 10 years,” CFES suggested in a public information release.
“Having working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside every bedroom and on each floor of your home is strongly recommended. More than 2,300 people die each year in home fires. Having a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm that works 24 hours a day greatly increases your chances of survival in the case of a fire,” CFES stated.
