Elk Valley RCMP is advising users of Facebook Marketplace of a sophisticated fraud / phishing scam involving the use of e-Transfers.

An Elk Valley resident reported that they were contacted by the suspect who offered to pay for an item with an email money transfer. The victim was sent a realistic looking email, where they were required to input their financial institution information; this enabled the suspect to withdrawal funds from the victim’s bank account, RCMP outlined on social media today (April 4).

Elk Valley RCMP advises residents to use caution when accepting e-transfers from unknown individuals and to consider utilizing services such as Autodeposit for e-Transfers.
