Highway 93 rolling again through park
On March 20, Parks Canada successfully completed avalanche control work in Kootenay National Park and Highway 93 is again open to traffic.
Cloud cover dissipated and visibility improved, allowing for helicopter flights to resume and complete work on multiple avalanche paths.
Highway 93 remains closed north of Lake Louise. The estimated time of opening is March 21 at noon.
Parks Canada only closes roads when necessary: when weather, road or avalanche conditions present a risk to motorists. We appreciate that extended closures can have impacts on people and businesses. Our aim is to keep these events as brief as possible.
Cooling temperatures will affect backcountry conditions, which are still listed as Extreme. Visitors should avoid all backcountry travel. Daily avalanche reports are available at avalanche.ca.
Parks Canada reminds visitors that you don’t need to venture deep into the backcountry or get off trail to be in avalanche terrain. Know the trails, area, and terrain before you go, and never go beyond the avalanche signage on popular trails if you are not prepared to travel in avalanche terrain.
We would like to thank visitors for their patience during this prolonged closure.
Check Alberta511 and DriveBC for the latest road conditions and remember to keep your gas tank or battery full, and pack an emergency kit including warm clothing, food, water, and other essentials.
